We run vocational courses for about 3,000 learners a year, mostly adults studying part-time around shift work. The pattern we see in the data is blunt: learners who get stuck at 11pm and cannot ask anybody do not come back. We want a study assistant inside the LMS that answers questions about the course material, works through practice problems step by step, and never simply hands over the answer to an assessed question. That last part matters — we are an accredited provider and an assistant that completes assessments for learners would cost us the accreditation. It should also know when to stop and say "ask your tutor", and it should tell the tutor it did.

• Ground the assistant in our own course material, not general web knowledge
• Implement worked-example tutoring that guides without supplying assessed answers
• Hard-block assessment items by ID, tested with deliberate attempts to extract them
• Escalate to the tutor with the conversation attached when the learner is genuinely stuck
• Report engagement by module so we can see where learners get stuck at scale
